Malawi - James & Jodi McGill | Print |  E-mail

Jim and Jodi McGill have been under appointment as mission coworkers since 1995.  Their most recent assignment, which began in 2000, is in Mzuzu, Malawi, just two hours from Embangweni, where they lived for ten years.  Jim and Jodi moved to Mzuzu at the request of the Synod of Livingstonia of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian, the PC (USA)'s partner in Malawi, in order to widen the scope of their work to include the entire synod.  After the reappointment in June 2004, Jodi began working part-time at the Ekwendeni Hospital's nursing school as a clinical instructor.  The predominant illnesses in Malawi are malaria, pneumonia, anemia, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS related illnesses.  The average life expectancy is 35 years, which reflects the high mortality rates from malaria and HIV/AIDS.
Jim serves two roles in the Synod of Livingstonia's Development Department, coordinator of protected water and buildings coordinator.  After moving to Mzuzu, Jodi became the Synod's coordinator for primary health care and at the same time also took on the work of interim coordinator for the AIDS department.

Germany - Greg & Christine Callison | Print |  E-mail

"We have the privilege of proclaiming the good news among 30 million Kurds," write the Rev. Christine Goodman-Callison and the Rev. Greg Callison, who were assigned to Berlin, Germany, at the request of the Evangelical Church of Berlin.  The mission specialists are serving as evangelists to Kurdish migrant workers and refugees, while helping build bridges between Christians and Muslims, Germans, and Kurds.  The couple is helping congregations become better informed about Kurds and other expatriate groups to combat racism and xenophobia.
There are a half million Kurds in Germany, the greatest number from Turkey.  Through hard work building caring relationships with the Kurdish community, Christine watched hostility and suspicion change into an open welcoming.  In 1997 the same Kurdish organization that threatened to wage a holy war against the church if any attempts at evangelization were made, invited Christine and other Christians to help the members celebrate their spring New Year's festival, complete with a Christian worship service.

How can I help? | Print |  E-mail

How can I support the mission at Park UPC?

It is our sincere hope that the Spirit has inspired the reader of this brochure to step forth in a new way with God.  God is always at work in the world and He invites us to join Him in that work.  So how can we do that?  Here are some options to consider:

· We can and should all pray for our missionaries.  Pray that God would give them success in their efforts.  Pray that Christ would guard, protect and strengthen them as they go about the Lord’s work.  Pray for God to grow them in their walk with Christ.  Pray for God to provide for their every need.

· You can give a financial gift to the Church in their name.  Simply designate that check to a specific mission cause by writing the missionary’s name in the memo line of your check to Park United Presbyterian Church.

· You can send them letters and e-mails of encouragement to the addresses listed in this brochure.

· You can request to become an active member of the Outreach Committee and help support them through our work here at Park UPC in a more hands on way.

· You can participate in one of Park UPC’s annual mission trips and see their mission efforts first hand, working alongside our partners in ministry.

Wherever it is that the Lord leads you, we hope that your faith might grow through your participation with these brothers and sisters in Christ.

In Christ

The 30 Hour Famine | Print |  E-mail

The 30 Hour Famine is an international youth movement to fight hunger.  At Park UPC we participate in this event every year as the main mission contribution from our youth group.  Our Youth get sponsors to support them as they go without food for thirty hours.  All money raised is sent to World Vision,  a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. They serve the world's poor — regardless of a person's religion, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Since the inception of the famine at Park UPC, our Youth have raised in excess of $15,000 to help fight world hunger.  World Vision’s motto is “building a better world for children”.  We are happy to participate with their main office and our local Pittsburgh office in that goal for the upward glory of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Project Hope | Print |  E-mail

PROJECT HOPE is an organization dedicated to inspiring hope during the traumatic event of a child's unexpected or long-term hospitalization.

They provide support and encouragement to families during this stressful time.  They believe parents and guardians must take care of themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually in order to meet the overwhelming needs of their hospitalized children.

Needed items are collected by the St. Peter's Reformed Church MOPS group.  Volunteers assemble the baskets for Project Hope.  Representatives of the group then deliver them to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.  The volunteer office at Children's Hospital then identify families with immediate needs and distribute donated items as needs arise.  Project Hope has a goal of distributing at least 40 baskets per month!

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”- Galatians 6:9
